Three Service Generation Methods

1. Single Encounter-Based

  • One encounter → one service → one claim line item.

  • Typical for outpatient and lower levels of care.

2. Encounter Bundling

  • Multiple encounters → one combined service → one claim line item.

  • Used at IOP/PHP for daily bundled billing.

  • Requirements: same date of service, same rendering provider, same CPT code, same modifiers.

  • Encounter type does not need to match across encounters.

  • Cannot cross date-of-service boundaries.

3. Auto-Generated (Autogen)

  • Service created without a corresponding encounter.

  • Used for residential and detox programs where clients are present but no clinical encounter is documented (e.g., weekends).

  • Services do not generate immediately — they run on a nightly sweep. If you've just made a change, allow until the following day for autogen services to appear.

  • Multiple autogen rules can run simultaneously for the same client on the same day.
